I tire of the way us hospitality staff are treated, especially this UK summer.

Much like how you undoubtedly feel, this heat is insufferable. Yet we must work in these conditions to feed the people that don't want to cook etc. and therefore make it someone else's problem.

Yes the food takes longer. Occasionally our service unfortunately might not be quite up to expectation. Perhaps we seem a little sad or slow. Front-of-house staff are exhausted. Kitchen staff are working in genuinely dangerous levels of heat. We are not paid enough, we are tired, sometimes understaffed and we work long, very antisocial hours just to get by.

If we fail to hit targets, the labour budget is squeezed tighter. Less labour = less hours for us = poorer service due to less staff. We are under so many corporate thumbs who never worked a day in a pub in their life and understand nothing except money. Some establishments (like mine) don't even have AC, though that's just the UK in general for the most part.

Please, have some empathy toward those that serve you in your local pubs/restaurants, just as we understand that it's too hot to serve yourselves and it's nice to go out with your family and friends for food and drink. We love to do the same. I'm sure your jobs and lives are not easy too. We are doing our best, but sometimes it's just not possible to put on a mask. We want to help you. Some of us even enjoy the social aspect of our job, and most of us are very capable at our roles. It's just quite difficult at the moment, and these heatwaves are merciless.

It's not just hospitality, but if everyone was a bit more understanding, public sector work would not be so dreadful.

I’m really sorry to say it, but if your response to Twitch feeding your streams to AI training is “I’m moving to a different platform”, you’re extremely naive and directing your attention incorrectly.

YouTube, or whatever other platform you upload your stuff on, will either scrape your content directly, or have it scraped by a third party. If you upload something to the internet, it will be used without your consent to train AI, no matter where you upload it. If you think there is a way to avoid this from happening, you’re naive, or at most, delaying the inevitable.

If you’re not ok with that, you have 2 options:
1 (the wrong one): give up on creating.
2 (the right one): push for legislation and larger scale control over generative AI and the training of AI models.

The only way to prevent this from happening is to make a larger effort against the entirety of generative AI. Complaining at one of the hundreds of tech companies using it isn’t gonna get you anywhere. We need to tackle it at the source.

Twitch, YouTube, or any other big content hosting platform aren’t going to change anything, because they know you realistically don’t have any alternatives. The only way to get them to change is if they’re forced to. Direct your attention to those who can apply that force.
