In April 1775, British troops under General Thomas Gage marched to Concord with the specific goal of seizing the gunpowder and weapons stored there. Patriot spies got wind of Gage's plan, and Paul Revere along with other riders spread the alarm. The colonial militia hastily mustered to meet the British at Lexington and later at Concord's North Bridge. With the first battle of the American Revolution, the colonists defied British authority, outnumbered and outfought them, and embarked on a lengthy war to earn their independence.
