I want you to meet some people. My people.

You’ve seen some of them on the news lately. Rivers and streams came up last week and just about wiped them out.

I’m sure you know the stereotype. Mid to lower income, God-fearing, church-going, gun-loving folks. Everybody has a truck, most of ‘em own a trailer to pull behind it, and the lawn service is that neighbor kid who’s saving up to buy his first car

Gunfire here isn’t the sound of a crime in progress. It’s the sound of hunters having a good weekend, good ‘ol boys having some fun with bottles on a fence, or one of them damned coyotes finally gettin’ what it deserves for taking cattle.

Things move slower there, and change isn’t always met with open arms. You might go an entire month with no communication between one another other than a little two-finger wave as you pass on the road.

Thing is, these people have been tested and tried by the worst this world has to throw at them. Before the war, there was no electricity and water got carried up from the well. Afterward, a light bulb and a washing machine made a difference, but things still moved slow.

When the boom times came, they went into town and worked at the factories making TVs, radios, door locks, auto parts, blue jeans, lawn mowers, folding chairs, charcoal grills, and even some submarines.

But it didn’t last.

When NAFTA came and the old manufacturing jobs left, they dug deep, trained up, and found new ways to live. Because they had to.

When the tobacco that put food on the table and kids through college and kept the bankers at bay finally died out for good or ill, they learned new ways to farm.

They’re no stranger to floods. More than once the rains have poured down on these mountains and turned hollers into whitewater canyons. Valleys where there’s just enough room for the road, the river, and a house have been swept clean time and time again.

Droughts have nearly ended many livelihoods in these foothills, when the alfalfa won’t grow and the hay that feeds the cows turns into dust for months at a time. Fires have rolled through these mountains, taking homes and lives, leaving nothing behind but ashes and tears.

Blizzards come every so often, too. Snow buries the roads in feet of snow or inches of ice, leaving the world cold, dark, and dangerous.

But a funny thing happens when misfortune falls on these hills. These folks don’t break. They bend. Sometimes they bend so far that all they can do is sit in the ashes and cry for a while.

But they never break. Because when these folks start to bend, their neighbors rise up and help. These people come together, and they get it done. No orders are given, no general call goes out. When the need is known, they go.

When the odd blizzard strikes, they chain up the 4x4 and venture out, checking on the old, the infirm, or those that might be cold until the power comes back on. Old folks get their driveways cleared by people they never even see.

When the drought threatens the farm, loads of hay from other fields and other farms show up on trailers. When the wells go dry, water tanks on flatbeds shows up to keep the troughs filled.

When a tornado, hail storm, or some other weather calamity strikes, they just … go.

Come on boy, a father tells his son. They put chainsaws, chains, axes, and hatchets in the bed of a truck and go. They see people who need help, and they help. Trees get cut and pulled off of roads and houses. Tarps go up over broken roofs.

When they’re done, they load up and move on. No money asked, no thanks required. Maybe a handshake or a pat on the back. They can't linger, because there's more to do.

Churches set up shelters. The Ladies Auxiliary sets up hot meals in the church Fellowship Hall and throws the doors open for anyone who needs something to eat, a place to lay their head, or just a place to sit and cry on someone’s shoulder for a while.

Food and clothes come in first, followed by cleaning supplies, and all the little things needed to take the rough edges off of life.

These floods aren’t anything different. These people bend, but they won’t break.

Will they be worse for wear? Undoubtedly. There are holes in many lives now. Holes left by loved ones, livelihoods, and houses that were swept away in a muddy torrent.

But for every one of them that starts to crack, three more come in to help shore up their lives, their hearts, and their souls until they can stand up again.

Why? The ones on the Tennessee side of the line may claim the title, but they’re all Volunteers. Because they know their neighbors would do the same for them. Because they know that’s what Jesus would do. Because that’s the right thing to do. Because it’s who they are.

They’re the people of these hills and hollers. Ain’t nothing broke them yet.

Ain’t nothing ever going to, either.
