Hitler was not a corporal. While serving in the German army during World War I, he was promoted to the rank of Gefreiter, which is equivalent to a Private First Class in the US Army. He was never promoted beyond that rank. The title of corporal is often mistakenly used to describe his rank. 
Hindenburg actually coined the phrase (that Bavarian corporal) after the elections of July 31 1932..
