An interesting recent read about Brooke Shields after being elected as President of the Actors’ Equity Guild: “My first time chairing a meeting was something out of Monty Python…” (1 of 2)
“I hadn’t learned the vernacular. Robert’s Rules? I’ll get to know them! But if that’s my weakest place, then I’m OK, ’cause I can learn it, or someone who can do it better can do it and I can sit right by them.” (2 of 2)
I recently traveled to London & was able to tour the UK Parliament. One interesting thing I learned was both the Commons and the Lords now use card swiping machines in each Division Lobby to count the “ayes to the right, noes to the left” or “content/not content” respectively.
A reminder (including to myself) that RONR and AIPSC are rule books not playbooks. Strategy comes in various forms, but must be within the bounds of the org’s governing docs and parliamentary authority.
📸: my desk as I attempt to find inspiration on a different strategy.
Some further thoughts on the Speaker pro tempore; a field guide to the election this week; and no, I have no clue what is going to happen politically.

No matter what you do in life, you likely won't always agree with everyone. 🚫 Parliamentary procedure is the tool you need. 🌟 Learn more from Kay Crews, a professional parliamentarian who works with National FFA here: https://t.co/yQYqr1U8ly. 🔗 #FFA#NationalFFA
Despite how it might look, I was very happy to present at @AIPparlipro on how agendas work in practice compared to the book. Bottom line is that you can adopt the practices that work best for your group, but write your rules down clearly so everyone knows them.
Here at the @AIPparlipro annual session, but I haven’t been as diligent in posting. We finished business early (a rarity) so @Kapur_AK is presenting a bonus workshop! Today we are learning about agendas in the parliamentary authorities versus reality. Very interesting stuff!
We’ve had workshops so far from @LucyHicksA on limits of debate, Barry Glazer on killing motions, Shannon Sun on voting numbers and voting methods, Daniel Ivey-Soto on bylaw interpretation, and Colette Trohan on provisos. Great times of learning here in Lexington, KY & online!
Happy First Day of Summer, or as many parliamentarians often call it, “conference and convention season” with many groups holding meetings then.
I hope to see you at one of them soon!
On this day in 1837, Henry Martyn Robert was born in Robertville, South Carolina. A few years back, I visited the area and found this historical marker designating it as the birthplace of HMR.
