Note: Autumn Budget (usually in October/November) is the main budget for the coming financial year.
Spring Statement (usually in March) is an update on the budget, making any necessary fiscal adjustments.
#Policy ‘Didn’t the government present a budget just last year?’
Yes. The government usually presents the main Budget in October/November for the year ahead.
Then, in March, the Chancellor gives a statement which is basically an update on the budget.
#Parliament In May 2025, Rayner bought a flat in Hove & told lawyers it was her main home, and paid standard stamp duty.
However, she already had an interest in a Manchester home held in a trust, and even if she wasn’t living there, HMRC counts that as owning another property.
Note: In the UK, when you buy a property, you pay a tax called stamp duty.
How much you pay depends on whether it’s your only/main home (which means you pay a standard rate); or you already own another property (which means you usually pay a higher rate).
#Parliament When Parliament is in recess, it means that both the House of Commons and the House of Lords are on break and will not meet during this period.
There are several recesses throughout the year, including during Christmas and Summer.
After the leak, more Afghans were compensated and relocated to the UK, even though only about 15% had initially met the criteria for ARAP.
Some named individuals in the leaked data have been killed since the leak.
Note: ARAP is the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy.
#Parliament The government secretly relocated thousands of Afghans to the UK under a new scheme created, after someone in the Ministry of Defence leaked the names of up to 19,000 Afghans who had applied for ARAP.
This leak put them at risk of being hunted down by the Taliban.
This matter was previously kept secret by the government under a legal injunction but was made public today.
The ARAP scheme was established to facilitate relocation to the UK for Afghans who supported British forces and feared retaliation following the Taliban takeover in 2021

The 24-week limit, 10-week pill limit, two-doctor sign-off, legal grounds under the 1967 Act, and the criminality of non-consensual abortion stay unchanged.
Medical professionals assisting in illegal abortion (after 24 weeks) remain prosecutable.
#Policy Since 1967, abortion can be legally accessed up to 24 weeks. Later abortion is criminalised in England & Wales.
The new law means women can’t be sent to jail for abortions after 24 weeks.
The law doesn’t change how abortion services are provided or legal safeguards.
Since 1967, women can access abortion pills at home under 10 weeks.
Abortion after 10 weeks up to 24 weeks is done surgically in clinics.
Abortion after 24 weeks in rare cases of severe fetal anomaly or risk to the mother, is allowed and must take place in NHS hospitals.
#Policy Today is Spending Review day, meaning we’ll find out how much money the government plans to allocate to each department (e.g., health, education, transport, justice, etc.) until 2029.
The Chancellor will deliver this speech after PMQs this afternoon.
What do voters think should be in spending review?
The spending decisions by the chancellor will affect the lives of people right across the country.
Sky's Becky Johnson spoke to people in Peterborough, who have been telling us what they think should be prioritised.

The child element of Universal Credit is an additional amount paid to families with children as part of their overall UC award.
This is separate from Child Benefit, which is a different payment entirely.
#Policy Families on Universal Credit get an extra amount (called the child element) for each child. But the two-child benefit cap means they only receive this amount for their first two children.
Reform says they’ll scrap this rule so all children qualify for the extra amount.
Nigel Farage will this week outflank Sir Keir Starmer by committing to scrapping the two-child benefit cap and fully reinstating the winter fuel payment
