These are the moments that make me so thankful to run this account. The Odyssey is one of the best films I’ve ever seen & to share my experience with this film alongside everyone else on this app is something I’ll never forget. I honestly can’t believe Christopher Nolan pulled this off. Dear God, thank you for Cinema.

Before #FIFA start pumping the propaganda tonight and telling us all how amazing this #WorldCup has been, let’s remember they oversaw:

- highest ticket prices ever and took a cut from resale sites.

- did nothing about Somalian referee and dozens of staff who were banned from entering the US for no legitimate reason.

- stood by as Iran were forced to train outside the US and travel in on match days.

- overturned red cards after phone calls with the president.

- Americanised the beautiful game with hydration (TV) breaks and 25 mins half time in the final

- guided Argentina through the tournament with less travel, VAR support and blatantly turning a blind due to their aggression and foul play.

I watched the Odyssey today at the imax, first time watching a film on a imax screen and was blown away by this film, I immediately wanted to rewatch it again, I cannot tell you enough how good this film is. Please go watch it and if you can catch it at the IMAX!

I saw The Odyssey (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) a second time on Friday immediately after seeing it Thursday. This is the only time in the history of running this account that I’ve reviewed the same film back-to-back the day after its release. And after seeing The Odyssey a second time, I’m honestly ready for a third. Yes, I consider this one of the best films of the decade. Yes, I consider this the single best film of Christopher Nolan’s career. And yes, this is the film I think will win the Oscar for Best Picture, including Dune: Part 3 - and I say that as someone who has seen three minutes of Dune 3 & couldn’t believe his eyes. The Odyssey is quite frankly one of the best films I’ve ever seen. 

Those of you who’ve followed me by now know how strongly I believe that movies are moments: long after we’ve seen a film, we don’t remember plot-lines, characters, or even how a film ends sometimes. We remember moments. I consider a “masterpiece” a film that is filled with moment after moment after moment. That is precisely what The Odyssey achieves: it gives us moment…after moment…after moment. 

Upon rewatching a second time, albeit not in IMAX on 70 MM this go around, what stood out to me the most is that Nolan pulls off a different type of magic every time Odysseus and his men pull off to shore. First, it’s the Cyclops, which might honestly be the film’s best sequence. Then, it’s the mammoth warriors on Laestrygonians. Followed by Circe’s Island where Odysseus’s men are turned into animals. All of which is followed by a trip to Hades & then the Sirens’ Island. Each of these sequences demands something different from Nolan as a filmmaker. He’s forced to deploy different styles & techniques throughout- some utilize sound & practical effects more (the Cyclops) others have to literally navigate the sea (Sirens’ Island). But every last one of these sequences constitutes a moment. Strung together, you get a masterpiece. That’s all without mentioning the flashback sequences describing the fall of Troy, which, again, are fucking impossibly breathtaking. 

The seminal moment of all the moments I just listed is Odysseus visiting Hades. Nolan primarily shot the Underworld in Iceland & upon rewatch, it’s this sequence that really took my breath away. It’s arguably the emotional core of the entire film outside of Odysseus’s final monologue to Penelope in the film’s last act. The way Sinon & Agamemnon rise from the dead & tell their stories is haunting & chilling while totally unforgettable. It’s one of my favorite sequences from any Nolan film ever. It’s also the best use of the score throughout the film.

I’ve had enough time & I’ve given enough thought- Hell, I’ve spent 6 hours watching this film in two days- and I truly consider The Odyssey to be as good as Gladiator, The Lord of the Rings, or any other epic of my lifetime. From the score to the cast to the final frame, I don’t think there’s anything about this movie I would change. The Odyssey might be the best film released since I started this account. At a minimum, it’s struck me the most in the immediate aftermath of my first two viewings. 

Cinema lives.

4 years ago we chatted in California and you're one of the most engaging people I've interviewed, so my respect is genuine.

Let's park capitalism, profit and loss for a minute and strip things back to the basics.

You and I both played football and were lucky enough to make it our living.

I could play competitive, organised junior football for almost no cost ( I didn't even realise there was a cost to junior football elsewhere becaise I presumed it was free everywhere!) because my Football Association ploughs big sponsorship money directly into grassroots football.

So every boy and girl can access our sport. A good thing, right? If we're serious about spreading the gospel of a sport which joins millions across the world, creates friendships for life, teaches us discipline, fitness, winning and losing amongst many things.

So I'd hope that you, as a big voice in your country would advocate for every child having access to our sport? But how can they when we insert ultra capitalist business practice to something that is way more important than simply making money (the things I set out above)?

I'm a capitalist, not ultra, but I live and breathe in that system without (except when others are harmed, which is unfortunately growing globally) push back, but capitalism at the level you acknowledge isn't just hampering poor kids from enjoying the life lessons football teaches, but to effectively punish children and low income parents from participating in organised sport is morally wrong?

I'm not here to lecture, I'm an imperfect human living on an imperfect planet. But at times we have opportunities do do something that includes, not excludes. In England, that comes in the form of almost free access to organised football, for all, from 6 to 66. There is no downside to this. The 66 year olds often have, for free, started teams giving their time for free to all kids.

Trevor Cooper, a man from my home town, in his 30's started a team, Longford Boys( 11 to 15 age group teams, all coached by volunteer parents). Without him I wouldn't have been exposed to the sport, friends who are my besties to this day, a pro career or following my country, in yours, at a World Cup. One man gifted me that, for free.

Sometimes in life, romantic that it seems on a planet taught "me me me, money money money ", the most joyous experiences and lessons come without cost. Football is proven to be one.

Let's fleece sponsors and corporations to pay big bucks to sponsor our pro teams, stadiums, national teams. I'm all in on that.

With that money, like in England, it gets put into grassroots football to allow anyone and everyone the gift of football.

Charging $4000 or $15000 a season for a child to play organised football is morally wrong, Alexi. It just is.

Campaign for grassroots football in the USA to be properly funded by the US FA. You'll have more support than you could imagine and people will follow you. Your gift to the country you love and game you love.

Association Football, the world's greatest sport because it's affordable, inclusive, spellbinding, life affirming and joyous.

I was the beneficiary aged 11 of Mr Cooper offering a free team to play for, coached for free, a league organised by the local and national association, lifelong friendshops, health and fitness discipline and a passion I'll take to the grave.

Free can work in the USA. Fleece the sponsors, not the parents. They can pay for your free football.

Mainstream media at the World Cup is holding teams from Africa and the Middle East to a different standard to those from the West.
