The button pin(13) was discarded during casting. The fix was using parentheses
Before:
value = (uint8_t)pGPIOx->IDR >> PinNumber & (0x00000001);
After:
value = (uint8_t)((pGPIOx->IDR >> PinNumber) & (0x00000001));
I don't think I could've figured it out without AI.

I am writing my own drivers for GPIO on stm32 nucleo. No HAL or CubeMX. I was trying out my functions with a simple program where the inbuilt led toggles when the USER Button is pressed. It wasn't working. The problem? I was casting the IDR val to uint8 before shifting the bits
