Suriname is one of the only Latin American countries that still allows exports of parrots captured in the wild and there are major concerns that this legal trade has seen it emerge as a major hotspot for traffickers exploiting the legal trade to export highly endangered parrots.
WPT has joined partners in the @AsiaforAnimals coalition in writing to the governments of Sri Lanka and Suriname calling for answers as to how 330 birds were exported to Sri Lanka on a private plane from Suriname without the proper documentation.
