If calves had no disease at all, their risk of dying is just 2%. If they have diarrhea, they move to a 4% risk of death. Respiratory disease moves them to a 14% risk. They learned that diarrhea is a gateway disease for respiratory disease.

Dr. Dave Renaud at the University of Guelph says that a study in 2004 found 37% of dairy calves had failed passive immunity. A repeat of that study in 2019 found that number down to 19%, so a big improvement. Lots of dairy info at the @DairyatGuelph research information day today
