Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN), with support from SPRiNG, Tetra Tech International Development and UK International Development, successfully organized a One-Day Community Stakeholder Engagement in Daura Community, Katsina State. The engagement aimed to introduce the SAFE Katsina: Strengthening Access, Protection and Empowerment for Women and Youth project, identify key stakeholders within the community, understand their roles, strengthen existing community structures, and build trust and ownership of the project.
The engagement brought together key community stakeholders, including community leaders, women leaders, Hakima, youth representatives, religious leaders, the Market Women Association, and road transport officials. Participants shared their perspectives on the existing community structures, key stakeholders, and their respective roles in promoting peace, security, protection, and inclusive community development.
Through sustained collaboration and shared commitment, the engagement seeks to strengthen existing community structures while promoting the meaningful inclusion and participation of women and youth in peacebuilding, community governance, and the 2027 electoral process.

Our WCW today is Chinyere Nnenna Igwebe, President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN). She is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and an accomplished engineering leader, mentor, public speaker and trainer. With over 20 years of experience, she provides strategic leadership to advance the participation of women in STEM and foster institutional growth in engineering.
Her work spans engineering consultancy, environmental impact assessments, infrastructure planning, leadership, association management and technical support. Through her role at APWEN, she drives mentorship programmes, leadership development and strategic partnerships with government, industry stakeholders and international organisations to amplify the visibility and impact of women in engineering.
Dedicated to fostering inclusion and representation, she continues to inspire women and girls to pursue careers in STEM, while contributing to capacity building and professional development within the engineering sector.
She holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University (1996–2002). She also holds an Executive Master of Business Administration from London Metropolitan University (2015–2016) and a Higher National Diploma in Conflict Management & Resolution from Obafemi Awolowo University (2017–2018).

Our WCW today is Comrade Engr. (Mrs.) Maryann Ada Mbanaso, a leader, seasoned engineer, and passionate advocate for women’s empowerment in Nigeria’s energy, oil, and gas sector.
As the National Chairperson of the PENGASSAN Women Commission (PWC) and National Secretary of the TUC Women Commission, she continues to champion gender inclusion, workplace safety, women’s welfare, and equal opportunities.
A Chemical Engineering graduate of ESUT, she is a certified member of COREN, NSE, NSChE, and CIM, and is affiliated with Women in Nuclear (WiN) and the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS). She currently serves as a Senior Regulatory Officer at the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA).
She made history as the Pioneer Chairperson of the PENGASSAN Women Commission, using her leadership positions to influence progressive policies and create greater opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated sectors.
Her contributions have earned her several recognitions, including the NurtureHer STEM Development Award and NNPCL Excellence Leadership Award, among others.
Beyond her professional achievements, she is passionate about girl-child education, community development, and philanthropy. As a committed Christian and marriage counsellor, she continues to inspire through service, leadership, and advocacy.

Our WCW today is Adeola Azeez, the co-founder of Women in Management, Business and Public Service (WIMBIZ), a business leader and board executive with over 30 years of experience in governance, business development, negotiations, risk management, and financial crime compliance across West Africa.
Currently serving as Partner and West Africa Representative of Sigma Risk, she brings extensive expertise in financial crime risk and strategic management. She previously served as Director/Deputy Country Representative, Nigeria, at Deutsche Bank, where she led major financial transactions, strengthened partnerships, and supported operational sustainability across West Africa.
As Chairperson of WIMBIZ in 2011, she led initiatives that expanded the organisation’s reach, increased women’s participation particularly in Northern Nigeria and strengthened partnerships that created opportunities for Nigerian women entrepreneurs to access international markets.

Our WCW today is Solape Sonuga, a policy advocate, governance expert, and leadership development strategist committed to advancing inclusion and sustainable development in Nigeria.
Currently the Director of the Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI), she is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of public sector leaders. Through her work, she has trained and mentored hundreds of emerging leaders while engaging policymakers and public officials nationally and internationally.
With experience spanning government, the private sector, and civil society, she has worked extensively across policy development, legislation, political administration, project management, interparliamentary affairs, and human capital development, with a strong focus on increasing the participation of women and young people in decision-making.
Earlier in her career, she served as the youngest legislative aide to the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, contributing to key legislative priorities and reforms, including the Legislative Agenda, Reserved Seats Bill, Independent Candidacy Bill, Police Service Commission Bill, Student Loan Bill, and Electoral Act.
Beyond her professional work, she is a Global Shaper with the Abuja Hub, where she has held several leadership positions and played a key role in convening the first-ever Nigeria Global Shapers Conference in 2023.
She currently serves as Shaping Politics Lead and Recruitment Lead and has been elected Curator Elect of the Abuja Hub.
Through her commitment to leadership, inclusion, mentorship, and public service, she continues to inspire young people and champion a more inclusive future for Nigeria.

From Law to Practice: Advancing Criminal Justice Reform in Nigeria is a new publication by the Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative (Partners West Africa–Nigeria) on moving criminal justice reform from progressive laws to practical change for citizens.
Drawing on PWAN’s work across Nigeria, it highlights evidence and lessons on implementing the Administration of Criminal Justice Act/Laws, expanding access to justice, reducing pre-trial detention, strengthening legal aid and the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme, updating criminal and penal codes, building institutional capacity, and improving accountability across the justice system.
The publication argues that Nigeria’s next phase of reform must institutionalise what works, close the gap between law and implementation, and build a justice system that is efficient, accountable, inclusive and responsive to citizens.

What happens when a lawyer walks into a police station before a suspect ever sees a courtroom?
For many detainees, that simple intervention can mean the difference between prolonged detention and access to justice, between abuse going unnoticed and a violation being stopped.
The Police Duty Solicitor Scheme (PDSS) has shown that early access to legal representation can do more than protect detainees. It can improve police conduct, strengthen case handling, reduce rights violations, and build trust between citizens, lawyers, and the police.
But there is an important question we must ask:
