Welcome! If you're on your own—by choice or by chance—join me to discuss the pleasure of independent life as well as the battles for equality yet to be fought.
“An amazing amount of people will come on their own,” she said. “Especially after the first time, when they realize that everyone is friendly and will talk. That’s a very nice part of it.”https://t.co/1qxyGhAGvw via @torontostar
"...it includes all abusive conduct by which one intimate partner coerces and controls the other, thus depriving them of their autonomy."
I didn't know there WAS any autonomy in marriage...at least for women.

I realize that most people aren't Canadian, but take a minute and look at the inequity for singles in Canada. Look below the charts to understand the reasons:
@JillCo This has been going on since the 1970s. People used to go to Dublin or the Caribbean, as well as the USA. Canada never cared. This country has never learned anything.
@belladepaulo@NPR “All by themselves,” NPR? You do know that sounds like what parents say to their little children, don’t you? Maybe we who prefer to watch performances alone are more serious about the work. Not every activity is about socializing and not everyone needs constant companionship.
@belladepaulo I’ve not had a chance to read these yet, but I have a related question: why are there so many couples therapists, marriage counsellors, couples retreats, marriage self-help books, divorce lawyers, and—my favourite—restraining orders issued—if coupledom/marriage is superior?
@itsbooyeah Saw your piece on Ontario’s female-male pay gap. You might like to look into the single-married pay gap, too, as well as the tax disadvantages of living independently. These and other discriminatory practices against singles are not addressed enough.
Attention: @thenocturnists is launching a new series called Trust in Medicine. There's an open call for stories from patients as well as clinicians. Could be a good place to highlight the inequities in medicine when it comes to single people. Submissions:

@HomeEquityBank Your latest ad with Kurt Browning and the paramedic is what I’ve been waiting to see: a woman on her own doing something for herself. Single people are a demographic that few financial institutions acknowledge, even though our numbers continue to grow.
@PinketteXO We made such little headway over the last few decades and now there’s a backlash and we’re supposed to feel sorry for young men! The hell with that, I say.
@belladepaulo “Working families” is one of the most heinous, manipulative terms to enter the English language. AOC may think she’s “progressive,” but she’s using the language of right-wing economic policy. Apparently, she doesn’t know any better.
