The ongoing National Law University (NLU) row.
Met the young students who are at the forefront of the agitation that seeks the establishment of an NLU in Jammu, though @OmarAbdullah wants to have it in Kashmir.
There are valid reasons for the agitation:
1. Kashmir has law departments in both its universities, ie @UoKashmir and @cukmrofficial,* while Jammu has it only in @UniversityJammu and NOT in @OfficialCuj.* The imbalance needs to be corrected.
2. Admission to NLUs is based on a national test, and all such NLUs get students from all over Bharat. After what happened in April 2025, how many parents will be willing to send their wards to Kashmir?
3. The present government is trying to paint this demand as a Hindu vs Muslim issue, frequently referring back to the shutting down of SMVD Medical College (an absolutely unrelated case). How many times do we need to remind them that unlike Kashmir, Jammu is an all-inclusive region where almost 40% ppl practise Islam.
4. While Jammuites hold no grudge against Kashmiris and have no issue if in line with the University Act, two NLUs are established in two regions, I feel even Ladakh deserves a separate NLU. Many states already have multiple NLUs.
5. With 70% of GST generated by Jammu Region alone, how fair is it to force the students of the province to go elsewhere looking for seats? BTW, if K is really so big that it deserves more seats than J in the JK assembly, why it generates only 30% GST?

Last month, I wrote to the Secretary of the Union Ministry of @TribalAffairsIn highlighting the alarming issue of severe under-allocation and delays in the disbursal of funds under the National Fellowship for Higher Education and National Overseas Scholarship for ST students. Today, the same concern has been reported in the newspapers.

I urge the Union Government to resolve this issue at the earliest, as thousands of tribal scholars depend on timely support. I will continue to follow up until the issue is resolved.
