July 11 is the Feast of St. Benedict â and millions of Catholics around the world wear his medal. But do you know what it actually means?
Known as the "devil-chasing medal," the St. Benedict Medal is one of the most powerful sacramentals in the Catholic Church. Its power comes not from the object itself, but from Christ, who works through the faith of the one who uses it.
The Front:
St. Benedict holds a cross. At his side are a broken cupâafter monks tried to poison him, it shattered when he blessed itâand a raven carrying away a poisoned loaf, another failed attempt on his life. Around the edge is the inscription:
Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur
"May we be strengthened by his presence in our hour of death."
The Back:
A large cross bears the initials of the famous prayer:
C.S.P.B. â Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti
"The Cross of our Holy Father Benedict."
C.S.S.M.L. â Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux
"May the Holy Cross be my light."
N.D.S.M.D. â Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux
"May the dragon not be my guide."
Around the border is the exorcism prayer:
V.R.S. â Vade Retro, Satana!
"Begone, Satan!"
N.S.M.V. â Numquam Suade Mihi Vana!
"Never tempt me with your vanities!"
S.M.Q.L. â Sunt Mala Quae Libas.
"What you offer is evil."
I.V.B. â Ipse Venena Bibas!
"Drink your own poison!"
At the bottom is a single word:
PAX â Peace.
The medal was formally approved by Pope Benedict XIV in 1742. It became widely known after the miraculous healing of a young man named Brunone, who later entered the Benedictine Order and eventually became Pope St. Leo IX.

Following the Mass for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Pope Leo XIV descended to the tomb of St. Peter alongside Metropolitan Emmanuel Adamakis of Chalcedon, who was sent to Rome by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to represent the Orthodox Church for the annual celebration.
Earlier in the liturgy, Pope Leo blessed and imposed the palliaâwhite woolen bands bestowed upon 35 newly appointed metropolitan archbishops as signs of their communion with the Successor of Peter and their mission to shepherd Christ's flock.
Greeting the Orthodox delegation, Pope Leo called Patriarch Bartholomew his "dear brother" and prayed that Saints Peter and Paul "may sustain us on our journey of communion in the footsteps of the Savior." Their shared prayer at the Apostle's tomb stands as a powerful witness to the Catholic and Orthodox Churches' continuing commitment to seek the unity for which Christ prayed: "that they may all be one."

Pope Leo XIV issued an appeal to human traffickers, exploiters and criminal networks involved in the movement and abuse of vulnerable people. "Stop. Repent," he said, in a meeting with organisations working with migrants in Tenerife.
"Break those chains and free those you hold in bondage," he insisted. "Return what has been taken and make amends as much as you can. Repent while there is still time, for Godâs mercy can reach even the most hardened sinner, but it enters only through the narrow gate of truth, justice and conversion"
