Faced with such terror, Germany would not fight back. Most Germans would run or hide; our institutions would negotiate surrender, insisting there was no other option. The instinct to obey power and keep one’s head down in times of trouble has, shall we say, a history in this country and is deeply ingrained.

Many of our people wouldn’t fight for their own freedom, much less for anyone else’s. They can’t fathom Ukrainians’ action and sacrifices in the face of literal death. Ukraine’s courage is an affront to their natural cowardice and willingness to appease the powerful, which they wouldn’t call cowardice or appeasement but rather ‘prudence’ (‘Besonnenheit’).
A minority of Germans would fight. They wouldn’t be enough. The only thing that might save Germany in face of an attack like Ukraine has faced would be our allies, if they stood with us — fought for us — quickly enough.
Germany’s freedom ultimately relies on us having allies more courageous and reliable than ourselves.
