On this day in 2002, Hugo Chavez is overthrown in a US-backed coup, bringing in a right-wing coup regime that rescinded many of the reforms Hugo Chavez introduced which benefitted millions of poor Venezuelans, including the 1999 constitution which was approved by popular referendum.

The coup regime would be short-lived, as loyalists in the Venezuelan military worked to return Chavez to power. Supporters of Chavez and the Bolivarian revolution surrounded the Presidential Palace in Miraflores and demanded his return. Chavez returned to power after just two days, triumphant in the latest episode of class war in Venezuela🇻🇪.
