Retired from career at ECCC ( regional monitoring manager & meteorologist) Still a weather geek & armchair meteorologist who loves a good storm & beaches.
@Squamishweather Yes. Eccc has been working with industry Canada on a solution and with a bunch of testing have identified specialized filters that seem to do the trick. They have to be specifically engineered for each radar so it will take some time to get them all done.
@RyanVoutilainen If you use the DPQPE products you wonโt see the star wars effect - the dual pol filters it out. ( the ECCC displays ( web and app) use the DPQPE.
@MorganLaidler @Squamishweather @RyanVoutilainen Not sure what ECCCs plans are going forwards. This project was funded to replace the old radars circa 2000 with new ones. The new radars have better range so more areas have coverage now. (330 km new radars vs 240 km old for conventional radar /240 km new vs 113 km for Doppler)
@proflex4ever @Squamishweather The display Jason showed was from RadarScope ( a good app for weather radar data) however you can see the data from this latest (and all radars) from the radar tab on ECCCโs free app called WeatherCAN. The radar data on WeatherCAN is zoomable right down to neighbourhood level.
@greyhame23@ensembleator The elevation Of the radarโs feedhorn is 612 metres. The lowest scan angle is 0 degrees so itโs scanning the sky above your location.
@ensembleator@proflex4ever@greyhame23 Was integrated into the national zoo able display within 10 minutes of being switched to operational in Monday morning.
I usually use RadarScope on my iPhone. A small one time fee, but well worth it I think. You can see some showers up in that direction this morning
The new Halfmoon Peak, BC radar is available! It replaces the old Mount Sicker station and is located at a new site to offer improved #weather detection.

@greyhame23@ensembleator It is a large cell phone tower nearby. Hopefully a specialized filter will clean that up in the coming months. The DPQPE data cleans it up nicely so you wonโt see the radials on the environment Canada displays/app.
