To weaken the Akali Dal, Punjab Congress leaders, acting with Indira Gandhi’s tacit approval, actively promoted Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. It was Congress that helped build him up. The flames of separatism were fanned by the party itself.
Don’t be fooled by the sanctimonious line that “Indira gave her life for the country.” Yes, the country was shocked when she was assassinated. But it was the monster that she helped create that eventually turned against her, shattered a once-prosperous Punjab, and left deep scars on India that are still felt today.
The shockwaves of what transpired in the Golden Temple before Operation Blue Star and the events thereafter shook every corner of the country and Indian communities abroad.
I won’t even go into the 1984 Delhi riots here. But we all remember how Congress ran vicious, inflammatory newspaper ads during the elections that targeted an entire community and how that campaign delivered Rajiv Gandhi the biggest electoral majority in India’s history. And we were all swept away by the shock and grief of Indira’s death to support a young Rajiv who looked like he could lead India out of the morass his mother had left the country in.
The Punjab Accord that Rajiv Gandhi signed with Sant Harchand Singh Longowal was dead long before the Sikh leader’s assassination. It was a non-starter from the word go because the militants and politicians with their own agendas were never going to let it succeed.
So, before anyone paints the Congress as simply the victim or innocent bystanders of the decades of violence in Punjab, based on the words of Congress fanboys, it’s worth reading up on the unbiased history of those times.
