IMPROVE YOUR RELATIONSHIP BEFORE YOU TRY TO IMPROVE SOMEONE

If you can't improve someone's behaviour just by telling them once, it means your relationship with them is terrible. 

If your spouse drinks and won't change, if your child doesn't fold their clothes and throws them all in their bed, and if a friend won't stop seeing someone who's clearly abusive to them, improve your relationship with them before advising them to improve their behaviour. 

Communication is what is received and the door to receive communication is your good relationship. 

Nobody receives communication undistorted unless the relationship is genuine which means it is based on a long history of honesty. This is what trust in a relationship means.

We try to force and shout our message into the  brain of someone who thinks we are dishonest and don't have their best interests in mind. 

Whether you're an individual trying to influence someone or a leader trying to influence a group they won't change their behaviour or even follow your instructions unless you have a genuine relationship based on honesty and trust. 

Talking won't help. 

You need empathy and self-honesty to know how they see you. It's not so hard, just put your ego aside. 

If they don't trust you don't waste your time getting hurt. Ask yourself instead, "what do they need to see to improve their opinion of me?" 

Because, unless they have an improved opinion of you they won't improve their behaviour around you or towards you.
