Aganglionosis/Hirschsprung's disease. The acetylcholinesterase stain (an ancient histochemical stain) highlights presynaptic parasympathetic nerve twigs extending into the lamina propria because they cannot synapse on submucosal ganglion cells. Calretinin shows loss of fibrils.

Orient the specimen by identifying anatomic structures (such as the condylar process), looking at the type of teeth present, and by examining the curvature of the bone.

Right colon: exophytic, polyploid, does not usually obstruct

Left colon: centrally ulcerated, serpiginous border, tends to obstruct
