It actually came down at about 5:20 p.m. Other outlets (including CNN and Reuters) also circulated premature or confused reports that day as the situation was chaotic—fires raging, debris everywhere, conflicting local media and emergency-service info flying around. BBC later explained it as relying on an incorrect Reuters wire that was corrected; editor Richard Porter called it a straightforward mistake in the fog of live coverage, not a script or insider tip. No evidence supports the idea that this proves media complicity in a controlled demolition.

On WTC 7 itself: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) conducted a multi-year investigation and concluded the 47-story building collapsed due to uncontrolled fires (started by debris from the North Tower) that burned for nearly seven hours without sprinklers.
