Paying incarcerated workers less than the min. wage is a vestige of slavery that has no place in our State. We must abolish sub-minimum wage for all labor and go further by ensuring folks receive the certification/training needed to get good paying jobs after their sentence too.

Read @shanilaskinn’s eye-opening article in @RealChangeNews on Washington’s use of incarcerated wildland firefighters, who make up a quarter of the DNR’s firefighting crews. In fire season they’re paid local minimum wage; when not dispatched they receive as little as $1.25/hour.

Over the weekend I witnessed the Black Canyon Fire outside of Naches. Crews across WA are digging fire lines, helping communities prepare, and removing fuels that spread the flames. We all owe them a great debt and to honor it all of us must do our part to prevent fires.
