This deep-sea octopus was filmed stretching its arms and webbing outward to form a large, balloon-like shape at a depth of about 1,600 meters (5,250 feet).

This posture, often called an umbrella or parachute display, is seen in several deep-sea octopus species.

The expanded shape may help the octopus appear larger to potential predators or allow it to drift slowly above the seafloor while searching for prey. In deep waters, where food is scarce, such behaviors reduce energy use and increase feeding efficiency.

At this depth, the environment is cold, dark, and under very high pressure, with no natural sunlight. Animals living here have soft bodies, slow metabolisms, and specialized behaviors adapted to these extreme conditions.
