The great underreported story in European politics is not the rise of the populists. It is the decline of the old power parties.

Across Europe, parliaments are closing for the summer. Desks are being cleared. Final emails are being sent.

When politicians return in four or five weeks, one question will dominate:

The parties that governed Europe after World War II cannot win even 50% of the vote between them.

That is already the reality in countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands.

To their right stand the parties the old establishment calls right-wing populists. They focus on the consequences of mass migration from the Greater Middle East and reject what they often mock as the uniparty - the broad consensus on globalisation, migration, multilateral institutions and international treaties.

To their left, newer movements are also growing. In some countries, the Greens dominate. In others, the Islamo-left.

The defining political drama over the next six to twelve months will therefore be twofold: the continued erosion of the centre - and the question of who governs with whom.

Many establishment parties insist that the new right is the unacceptable partner.

Perhaps. But cooperation with the new left is not without consequences either.

Some factions of the European left openly welcome demographic change because they believe it will strengthen the political left. At the same time, a stronger Islamo-left is also likely to mean more antisemitism. And a stronger radical left would almost certainly bring more wokeness and a faster push towards degrowth in the name of the green transition.

Europe is entering a genuinely tripolar political era.

That - not any single election result - is the real story to watch after the recess.
