"Tainted Love" is not a Soft Cell original. The song was written by Ed Cobb and first recorded by Gloria Jones (later the partner of Marc Bolan of T. Rex) in 1965 as the B-side of the single My Bad Boy's Comin' Home. Although it initially went unnoticed, it became a cult favorite on the UK's Northern Soul scene during the 1970s.

Inspired by that version, Marc Almond and Dave Ball reimagined the song with a minimalist, dark synth-pop arrangement for their 1981 debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. Recorded in just a day and a half in a small London studio, it became #1 on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks and peaked at #8 on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it spent a then-record 43 consecutive weeks on the chart.
