We, at AIRO are currently exploring the potential integration of electronic nose technology in our upcoming iterations of the AIRO Air Miner. By venturing into this field, we aim to not only advance air quality monitoring but also contribute to health-related research.
What is an Electronic Nose?
An electronic nose (e-nose) comes equipped with a plethora of sensors, each designed to detect specific components of an odor, thereby analyzing its chemical makeup. These sensors are incredibly sensitive, surpassing the human nose's capabilities. They can be deployed in hazardous environments, providing a safe and efficient means to detect toxic substances.
Working Principle of E-Noses
The e-nose functions through a sensor array and onboard pattern recognition algorithms. When exposed to a chemical vapor, the sensors react by altering their resistance, which is then measured to identify the substance. This process involves several stages akin to human olfaction: interaction, sample acquisition, data processing, pattern matching, and data storage/retrieval.
The core components of e-noses include:
A sample delivery system.
A detection system that responds to volatile compounds.
A computing system for data analysis and pattern recognition.
Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Neural Networks play pivotal roles in evaluating and interpreting the signals from the detection system, providing nuanced insights into the nature of the odor or aroma.

A common example of e-nose technology in everyday life is the breath analyzer used by law enforcement to measure blood alcohol levels through a driver's breath.
Cyrano de Bergerac: From History to Technology
Cyrano de Bergerac, the storied French soldier and artist, lends his name to the Cyranose® 320, a handheld chemical vapor sensing device. It's famed for its advanced sensor array and pattern recognition algorithms, which detect and identify the unique "smellprint" of various substances.

E-noses have found their place in health and security, aiding in the detection of harmful bacteria like MRSA, identifying lung cancer, monitoring environmental conditions, and even assisting in food quality control. We wish to research ways to enhance our Air Miners with the advanced capabilities of the Bosch BME688 sensor that we have previously discussed, marking a significant evolution in air quality assessment. This integration goes beyond standard monitoring; it seeks to uncover the intricate relationship between air constituents and health.
Imagine a scenario where AIRO Network's Miners transcend the boundaries of environmental monitoring: a feature where users can simply exhale into their device, and within moments, the linked mobile application processes the nuances of their breath. This function would analyze the complex spectrum of breath constituents, leveraging the sensitive detection capabilities of the aforementioned sensor to potentially pinpoint indicators of underlying health conditions.
Enabling such a personalized health assessment tool could be an optional premium service, providing added value to the AIRO ecosystem.
