Milan, 25 Apr. – In an investigation by the Milan Public Prosecutor’s Office, Gianluca Rocchi is accused of sporting fraud for allegedly selecting referees favourable to Inter in certain matches. There are three charges listed in the notice of investigation seen by AGI.
In one, it is stated that Rocchi, “in his role as AIA refereeing designator, acting in concert with several individuals at San Siro stadium, during a Coppa Italia match ‘arranged’ the appointment of the referee for the Serie A match Bologna–Inter (20 April 2025) in the person of Andrea Colombo, as a referee ‘favoured’ by the visiting team, Inter, who were engaged in the title race in the final stages of the football season.”
In the second charge, the scenario broadens. Rocchi, the prosecutor writes, “as designator, acting in concert with several individuals at San Siro, during the first leg of a Coppa Italia match (2 April 2025), ‘arranged’ or ‘shielded’ the appointment of referee Daniele Doveri, assigning him to officiate the tournament semi-final (23 April 2025) in order to then ensure Inter would have refereeing appointments different from the ‘unwelcome’ Doveri for the potential subsequent Coppa Italia final and for the remaining Serie A matches,” which were of “greater importance for the Milanese team.”
Finally, the third charge relates to Udinese–Parma on 1 March 2025, when, “in his capacity as VAR supervisor, acting in concert with others, during the match he influenced VAR official Daniele Paterna, inducing him to call an on-field review for referee Fabio Maresca with the aim of awarding a penalty to the Friulian side, despite Paterna holding a different view.” (AGI)
