Competition in PE can motivate, challenge, and develop resilience.
But participation focused approaches can also help students feel more confident, included, and willing to engage.
The challenge for PE teachers is finding the right balance.
Some students thrive in competitive environments.
Others participate more when pressure is reduced.
So what creates the best learning environment in PE?
✔ Competition
✔ Participation
✔ Or a balance of both?

Confidence plays a huge role in how students engage in PE.
When students feel unsure, participation often drops. But when lessons are structured to support success and progression, confidence begins to grow naturally.
Building confidence in PE is not about lowering expectations.
It is about creating the right environment for students to develop.
Small wins create momentum, and over time, that leads to stronger participation, engagement, and learning.

Competition in youth sports can build confidence, discipline, resilience, and teamwork.
But when does healthy competition become too much?
For some young athletes, competition inspires growth.
For others, too much pressure can take away the joy of playing.
At the end of the day, sports should help young people grow, not just as athletes, but as individuals too.
So here’s the question:
Do you think competition is healthy for young athletes? 👀
👇 Share your thoughts in the comments:
Is competition helpful for young athletes — or can it sometimes do more harm than good?

Athletics season is underway in many schools.
It is always one of those parts of the PE curriculum that can be brilliant when pupils are engaged, moving well, and starting to understand the different events.
But I also know it can be difficult to deliver.
Running, jumping, and throwing all have their own technical demands, and in a busy PE lesson, it is not always easy to know how much detail to give, where to start, or how to progress pupils with different levels of confidence.
That is why I am running the Athletics Track and Field Fundamentals Workshop.
The session is designed to give PE teachers practical ideas they can take straight into lessons, with a focus on keeping athletics clear, purposeful, and easy to apply.
Saturday, 30th May
10:00 AM UK | 1:00 PM Dubai | 5:00 PM China
If athletics is part of your curriculum this term, this should be a useful one to join.

Time is one of the most valuable parts of any PE lesson.
The more active your students are, the more they learn.
When activity time is maximised:
✔ Students stay engaged
✔ Learning becomes more effective
✔ Lessons run more smoothly
Small changes in structure can make a big difference to how much students actually do during a lesson.
