This is a point I've made many times, including after interviewing Donbass commanders in October 2022, in a (then) outpost 70 m from Ukrainian forces in Avdeevka. Excerpts:

But also, when speaking with ordinary civilians in Donbass, or elsewhere in Russia, I don't come across hatred for Ukrainians. The hatred, as John said, is directed at Zelensky, his regime, and those who back Ukraine's terrorism.

“The unprecedented attack was clearly planned to disrupt the elections. The enemy failed,” he said."
