I took my baby for vaccinations a while back

And for this particular one, the nurse told me it was the one that was the most painful of them all
She said “it burns as it goes in”.

And then she told me to brace myself because my baby was going to scream.

So I sat there. My baby was smiling and playing. He didn’t know what was coming but I did.

And when they gave it to him, oh how he screamed. And my baby does not cry easily. But this thing made him scream.

I saw the way he looked at me. I’m sure his brain was wondering if I loved him. Because how could I sit there and watch him in pain

Why didn’t i save Him from this horrible nurse?

But I did not save Him. Not because i don’t habe the power to.
I sat there and watched my boy whom I love more than myself go through pain.

I didn’t save him from it. I knew that pain was a necessity he had to go through to get a vaccine that would fortify him against disease that can end him.

And in that moment, all I could offer him was comfort

And in that moment I think I understood the love of the Father in heaven a bit more.

How sometimes, He sees us go through some pain because that is the only was we can learn some lessons

He allows some delay because that is the only way we learn patience

He allows someone break your heart because that’s the only way you can learn about the comforter

He allows some sicknesses because that’s the only way you can learn healing

He allows people abandon you because that’s the only way you can learn to feel His companionship

He allows lack because that’s the only way you can learn His provision and sufficiency

And in that moment, all He offers is His warm embrace and comfort.

Not because He doesn’t have the power to save you from it but that pain is necessary to forge something in you.

That’s when you’ll understand the scripture that says “when you pass through the fire, I will be with you”

Notice he did not say “I will rescue you from it.”

He says I will be there, watching you, comforting you, but it won’t destroy you.

May God give us the grace, to endure hard times.

On my trip back home from Texas yesterday, we stopped at a waystation to get drinks & a simple meal. Wendy my beloved wife had been driving the van, but we decided to switch drivers. Lo and behold she couldn't find the key. We had a spare key locked inside the van, but ugh. Wendy painstakingly retraced her steps at the station. No luck. She asked the friendly clerks. No luck. We were all, naturally, upset. My son kept an eye on the van in case someone had nicked the key and was planning to steal it.

It looked like I was going to have to phone a locksmith at 8 pm at night to drive to Wellington Utah and open our van door. Who knows how long that would take? Plus I didn't really want to spend money on this. I was literally dialing a locksmith's number when Wendy said, "Let's pray about it."

I decided to pause the dialing so we could do the prayer - all five granddaughters together in the gas station's attached Subway. We'd been searching for the keys for 30 minutes now, and it was clearly hopeless - we'd scoured every inch of that bas station. But the way I saw it, the prayer wouldn't hurt anything. Just meant another 2 minute delay before I phoned the locksmith.

Well Wendy prayed for us, and then I got out my phone and started dialing. LESS THAN 30 SECONDS LATER, while I was still navigating the dumb auto-menus of the locksmith website, my granddaughter walks up with the key. She'd walked over to a stand of candy and found the key hanging on a container of gum.

I don't think my story is going to convince anyone of the efficacy of prayer if they're a non-believer, and that's fine. All I know is

Once, happenstance.
Twice, coincidence.
Three times, enemy action.

And this kind of instant answer to prayer has happened to me far too often to attribute it to happenstance or coincidence. So as I said, it might not convince you, but it certainly makes it a lot harder for you to convince me of the reverse.
