Let’s be clear: I will never excuse internet fraudsters. Their actions certainly contribute to our bad reputation globally. But to suggest that they alone are the reason Nigerians face harsh visa restrictions is dishonest. The truth is simple: the greatest damage to Nigeria’s image has been done by our politicians and those in power.

Their endless corruption, suppression of voices, human rights abuses, electoral fraud, intimidation, and total neglect of governance have broken this country’s back. They loot billions meant for schools, hospitals, and security, yet EFCC seems powerless or unwilling to bring them to justice.

Let’s not pretend fraud is unique to Nigeria. The World Cybercrime Index by the University of Oxford ranks Russia, Ukraine, China, the USA, and Nigeria among top cybercrime hotspots. If fraud alone determined how the world treated a country’s citizens, then Russians, Americans, or Chinese would face the same restrictions as Nigerians. They don’t. Why? Because their governments command respect. Our own leaders, through corruption and impunity, have destroyed ours.

So, EFCC, answer this: in the last 20 years, how many politicians have you truly jailed for looting? How many billions have you recovered that didn’t mysteriously vanish again? We see them every day, buying mansions abroad, flying private jets, and recycling themselves into government positions. And when a Canadian court can declare APC,the ruling party, as a terrorist organization, what moral ground does Nigeria have left?

Stop the excuses. Excuses solve nothing. Nigerians will only take EFCC seriously the day we see powerful politicians, not just small-time fraudsters, in handcuffs, and behind bars.

What this country needs now is accountability, responsibility, transparency, and real consequences, starting from the very top. Until then, every attempt to blame ordinary criminals while shielding political criminals will ring hollow.

Nigeria deserves better, and the only way forward is leadership by example.
