US–Iran tensions keep oil markets on edge.
Renewed tensions involving Iran and the United States are raising concerns about possible oil-supply disruptions.
Oil prices rose as markets assessed the risk, with potential consequences for fuel costs and inflation.
#GaddafiSeries
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was born on 25 June 1972.
Unlike his father, who rose through the military, Saif developed a public profile associated with education, international diplomacy, economic reform and political dialogue.
Gaddafi had several sons, but Saif gradually became the most visible political figure among them.
His father appeared to see him as someone who could preserve the family's influence while making Libya more acceptable to Western governments and international investors.
Saif's public image differed from his father's. He often appeared in suits, spoke English and presented himself as a modernising figure who could help Libya change without abandoning the existing political system.
Saif al-Islam was not formally appointed president or an officially designated heir. Nevertheless, through political influence, public visibility, reform proposals and relationships with foreign governments, he became the most prominent member of the Gaddafi family involved in preparing for a possible transition of power.
His story is a useful example of how a long-serving leader can attempt to build a family succession system without openly establishing a hereditary monarchy.
#History: How Muammar Gaddafi Groomed His Son to Succeed Him?
Muammar Gaddafi ruled Libya for 42 years, from 1969 to 2011. Although he publicly presented Libya as a state governed by popular committees rather than a conventional presidency, he increasingly positioned his second son, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, as a potential successor.
