“Fell on Black Days” — Soundgarden

Released in 1994 on Superunknown, this song was written by Chris Cornell and became the album’s fifth and final single. Despite how dark it sounds, Cornell explained it isn’t about depression, but about the sudden realization that things can go wrong without warning — a phrase borrowed from old blues slang meaning bad luck rather than despair.

The music video, directed by Jake Scott, is shot in stark black and white and shows the band performing inside a shadowy, abandoned industrial space. Its minimal setup, heavy contrast, and slow, claustrophobic camera movement mirror the song’s uneasy atmosphere and helped make it one of Soundgarden’s most recognizable visuals during the Superunknown era.
