The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallā Allah 'alayhi wa sallam) was sent as the last Prophet for whom the religion and its morals were perfected. God refers to him as mercy to the entire world. See Q21: 107.

He was not reported to have killed anyone or condemned anyone to death for switching their religion. When he could have killed people for it, he didn't. When he had the chance to take a just and fair revenge against pagans (real pagans who had committed several heinous crimes against the Muslims), he chose forgiveness and released the prisoners without ransom.

Despite the narrations that suggests that the one who leaves the faith should be killed, there is no proof of it in his time and there are greater number of verses in the Qur'ān indicating that the faith cannot be forced on anyone and everyone shall bear the consequences of their own free choices. His life examples and the verses of the Qur'ān are best proofs and examples of his prophethood. See Q2: 256; 5: 48; 16: 93; 11: 118; 88: 22.

The verses revealed in respect of fighting and killing the infidels like the Ahādīth reported in this regard were all given at a time when Muslims have endured over a decade of killing and persecution. They were verses of permission for the believers to fight in defence of their lives and faith.

Prophet Muhammad (ṣallā Allah 'alayhi salām) exemplified mercy, endurance, patience and forbearance. He admonished his blessed companions with patience and constantly warned them against being harsh and against injustice. See Q2: 190-193.

God says in the Glorious Qur'ān 10: 199:
"And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then, [O Muḥammad], would you compel the people in order that they become believers?"

This religion cannot be forced, it is not to be forced. It is to be preached, taught, explained and shown with its beauty and its pristine values and virtues and guidance belongs to God only.
