Dear Luvo,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposal for implementing a Digital Nomad Visa in South Africa. While I appreciate the potential benefits such a program could bring in terms of attracting remote workers, I am deeply concerned about its negative impact on our country's economy, society, and local communities.

First and foremost, the implementation of a Digital Nomad Visa would not contribute to South Africa's tax revenue. Digital nomads, by definition, are individuals who work remotely for companies based outside the country they are residing in. This means that they do not pay taxes locally, which poses a significant problem for our government in terms of revenue generation. With an already strained economy, it is crucial that we prioritize policies that bolster our tax base rather than erode it further.

Furthermore, the influx of digital nomads would undoubtedly drive up the cost of living for locals, particularly in cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg. As more remote workers flock to these urban centres, demand for housing, goods, and services would increase, leading to gentrification and pricing out many residents from their neighbourhoods. This exacerbates existing inequalities and diminishes the quality of life for those who call these cities home.

Moreover, the rise in homelessness can be partly attributed to the gentrification fueled by initiatives like the proposed Digital Nomad Visa. As property prices soar and affordable housing becomes scarce, marginalized communities are pushed to the fringes, exacerbating the issue of homelessness. It is incumbent upon us to address the root causes of homelessness and housing insecurity, rather than implementing policies that exacerbate these social problems.

In conclusion, while the Digital Nomad Visa may seem appealing on the surface, its implementation would have far-reaching negative consequences for South Africa. Instead of prioritizing the interests of foreign remote workers, we must focus on policies that benefit our local economy, protect our communities, and address the pressing issues facing our society. I urge you to reconsider this proposal and prioritize the well-being of all South Africans.
