XANTHELASMA PALPEBRARUM – yellowish, soft, flat or slightly raised plaques typically found around the eyelids, especially the medial canthus.
KEY POINTS:
They consist of lipid-laden macrophages (foam cells) in the dermis.
Often associated with hyperlipidemia, particularly elevated LDL and triglycerides.
Can also occur in people with normal lipid levels.
They are benign, but may cause cosmetic concerns.
TREATMENT OPTIONS: surgical excision, cryotherapy, trichloroacetic acid application, CO₂ laser, or radiofrequency ablation.
