You can debate race, privilege and politics all day. I’m dealing with actual children standing in front of me who need guidance, structure, skills and people who care about them.

When they walk through my doors, they’re MY boys.

They’re going to learn. They’re going to be challenged. They’re going to be corrected. And they’re going to be loved.

I’ve had to grow and challenge some of my own prejudices over the years too.

But one thing I know now: a child’s skin color will NEVER be my reason for refusing to pour into him.

I had the weirdest morning and I'm still trying to figure out where I went wrong, or if it's just a culture mismatch of my southerness and the Midwest. We volunteered to help another family dig out their potato patch and they asked us to come today from 11a-3p to get it done. That's pretty squarely in the lunch window for our family so I packed a cooler bc I don't typically expect people to feed all of us when we show up unless they explicitly offer, and even then I offer to bring something. We got there at 10 til 11 and passed out gardening gloves, grabbed our forks for unhilling the potatoes and got to work starting at 11. It took until about 2pm to get all the potatoes out, sorted by size and put on wire shelves to cure. As the kids got hungry I let them stop to eat lunch 2-3 at a time, it was just sandwiches, fruit and popcorn so maybe 20 mins per group for eating lunch (8 working kids, the toddler was "helping" but mostly just playing in dirt and feeding the goats through the fence). When we were all done the wife says, "Thank you for helping, but it would have been done faster if they didn't stop to eat." I didn't really know what to say to that so I just looked at her because a.) We were done an hour earlier than they thought b.) She was the one to plan it for lunch time and c.) They're children 6-14, working through lunch is possible but it's going to really effect productivity. Her tone didn't sound joking and she was acting kind of annoyed when they stopped to eat, but I don't know what else I was supposed to do, kids get so cranky when they're hungry.

@benonwine Three things that drives white liberal women crazy about a woman like Sydney. She is beautiful and she revels in it. She is comfortable with herself and it shows. But more than anything else, they hate her because she won’t conform to their mindset. That is the greatest sin.
