Putin famously claimed that the collapse of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century. He could not be more wrong.

The fall of the USSR was actually the greatest geopolitical miracle of modern history, freeing tens of millions of people from a brutal, blood-soaked empire.

The Soviet Union was a human disaster, a totalitarian crime against humanity, and a system that put war and imperialism ahead of feeding its own people.

For decades, the world was forced to endure the myth of the USSR as a superpower dedicated to human progress. In reality, it was nothing more than an advanced, totalitarian iteration of the Russian Empire.

It was an illegitimate project built on lies, paranoia, and catastrophic human suffering. It was a war-hungry, paranoid mistake of a country that sacrificed tens of millions of lives across its republics.

The Soviet ideology was fundamentally flawed because it placed a rigid, totalizing dogma above human dignity and basic freedom. It substituted human enterprise with central planning, creating an unsustainable economy that could build nuclear missiles but failed to put bread on the tables of its citizens.

From a historical perspective, the USSR was an aggressive, imperialistic state. It helped unleash the horrors of World War II by signing a pact with Nazi Germany in 1939, agreeing to carve up Eastern Europe. The alliance only ended because Hitler turned on Stalin in 1941.

Throughout its existence, Moscow treated member republics as colonies, extracting their wealth and enforcing cultural dominance while silencing any form of dissent through the Gulag system and police state surveillance.

When the Soviet Union finally imploded, tens of millions of colonized people were freed from Moscow's grip. Look at the Baltic states today. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania transformed into flourishing European democracies with living standards that far exceed anything Russia has ever produced. They stand as living proof that Russian control was the single greatest obstacle to human flourishing in the region.

Modern Russia's brutal attempt to eradicate Ukraine is proof that Moscow never accepted the death of its empire. Driven by corrupt, paranoid leadership, Russia is committing genocide because it has no ideology or attractive model left to sell. It can only sell imperialism and death.

Defeating this imperial machine in Ukraine is a global imperative. If the Russian empire is not shattered in Ukraine, it will remain a permanent threat to peace and force us to confront it elsewhere later

At this point, it no longer matters who gets elected in the U.S. after Trump. The whole world has already seen that the United States simply cannot be relied upon. In practice, there is no real system of “checks and balances,” and at any moment, an erratic autocrat and Kremlin agent can come to power.

When did russia’s aggression really begin?

People who don’t know the history are easily susceptible to propaganda. They will believe that russia attacked Ukraine because of “NATO expansion” or the Revolution of Dignity. But these arguments don’t survive a history test.

Remember the “special military operations” before any of that: Transnistria, part of Moldova, in 1992. Abkhazia and South Ossetia, parts of Georgia, in 1991–93. Then Georgia again in 2008. Then Crimea in 2014.

None of it was about “NATO expansion,” whatever paid propagandists and gullible Westerners blabber about. It was about reconstituting the Russian Empire – a project that began practically the day its latest iteration, the Soviet Union, fell. Until russian neo-imperialism and colonialism is soundly defeated, we will be dealing with it every few years.

Anyone who says NATO provoked russia to attack Ukraine is either brainwashed or simply doesn’t know the history.

Look at the numbers. Until 2013, only about 20–30% of Ukrainians (depending on the poll) were in favor of joining NATO. After the annexation of Crimea, that number rose above 50%. Today, after the full-scale invasion, close to 90% of Ukrainians want Ukraine in NATO.

It was russian aggression that pushed Sweden and Finland into NATO. It is russian aggression that keeps prompting countries to join – not NATO expansion forcing russia to attack its neighbors. The causation runs one way, and it isn’t the way the Kremlin claims.

Even Tucker Carlson’s infamous interview with Putin showed that the invasions of 2014 and 2022 had nothing to do with NATO. They had everything to do with Putin’s obsession with the breakup of Kyivan Rus in the 12th century and the USSR in the 20th. He cannot accept that Ukrainians are a nation. That is why he wants to erase Ukraine from existence.

Today, many were shocked by yet another video of the drone “safari” Russians are carrying out against civilians in Kherson. A Russian drone deliberately hunted down a man selling vegetables and detonated right next to him. The Russians even admitted to the crime, showing zero regret and openly boasting about tormenting people. The man was wounded in the blast. Every single day, ordinary people in Kherson face these Russian "safaris."

The world must see this. It must see every piece of evidence that Russia has gone mad and that its soldiers take pleasure in killing and abusing civilians. Without pressure on Russia, the dismantling of its capacity for aggression, and real security guarantees, it is simply impossible to imagine the world being able to coexist with this evil. We must remain resolute in defending life. We must act and support life in ways that force Russia to seriously think about peace rather than expanding the range of its drones.

This is not just about Ukraine. Russia’s campaign against human life must be stopped here in Ukraine before it spreads further. Finland and Kazakhstan, the Baltic states and Poland, the countries of the South Caucasus, Romania, and Moldova—all should work together to ensure real security guarantees and bring Russia’s war to an end. Peace is needed, which requires cooperation among everyone in the world who truly values peace. Thank you to everyone standing with Ukraine!
