A5: Repetition is key. Teaching a strategy once at the beginning of the year is not enough. We have used Word Gaps several times in the past three weeks as a fix-it strategy for constructing meaning of unknown words. I think they will use this now when reading alone. #HCPSRead
A4: Life is full of nonfiction, and as students get older, they will encounter more and more non fiction that helps to shape their worldview. Teaching them to read with a critical eye and with the author’s purpose/bias in mind is a skill for life. #HCPSRead
A3: Having strategies to teach Ss how to decode everyday problems that arise in non-fiction is critical. All readers, especially our lowest performing students, deserve strategies that will help them when they are reading alone, (in their room at night or on a test!) #HCPSRead
A2: I picked the Sketch to Stretch strategy to help my son understand high school biology this week. He was able to see the cell parts & their relationship to each other. I used this last week with my students as well. It helped connect vocabulary words to meaning. #HCPSRead
A1: Per the discussion between students on p. 227, ideas can be clarified/supported through the use of collaboration. If a child just works on their own/with the teacher directing answers, students are not able to voice their thinking which is a powerful learning tool. #HCPSRead
Watching the videos confirmed for me that when working with the strategies, students need guidance, questioning, and encouragement. Just saying to a student, “pay attention to the numbers” doesn’t help a student learn why they are important. #HCPSRead
A5: When teachers intro. strategies, they are providing Ss with a box of tools that can be used whenever they encounter difficult non-fiction text. If we only plan with activities in mind, then we are not anticipating what a student will encounter when they read alone #HCPSRead
A4: Syntax Surgery connects to LAFS 4.L.3.4, which states that students understand the meaning of unknown words through context clues, which S.S. encourages by drawing lines between connected words. #HCPSRead
A3: A graphic organizer can visually organize learning for students. I think this makes it more appealing to complete and more easily shared with peers. It also helps to scaffold learning, for example, like the scaffolding that takes place with the use of a KWL chart. #HCPSRead
A2: For all 3 strategies, listening to student talk can be valuable. Teachers can encourage students to keep going during SWBS, they can measure relevance/student interest with KWL & can make sure that the vocab. chosen for Possible Sentences is not too difficult #HCPSRead
A1: A strategy/signpost requires strategic thinking while an activity is something students complete. A skill is something that can be practiced & repeated for maximum effect, while a strategy is a tool that a student can use in different situations to assist them. #HCPSRead
My students used the three Word Gap questions and the Sketch to Stretch strategy with standard 2.4 and our non-fiction read this week. Many students found themselves using more than one strategy for unknown words #HCPSRead
A5: Nonfiction instruc. is multi-faceted.These strategies become a tool box to help ALL readers decipher non-fiction, especially readers that have been struggling their whole lives with comprehension. The self-questioning involved inspires deeper thought about the text. #HCPSRead
