Summer of ’69 is one of Bryan Adams’ greatest anthems. It was released in 1984 as part of his album, Reckless, and quickly became a rock classic.

The song is about nostalgia for youth, first love, garage bands, and carefree summers.

Although it seems to refer to the year 1969, Bryan Adams has clarified that it is not literal. He was only 9 or 10 years old in 1969, so it couldn’t be autobiographical about that specific summer. The title “Summer of ’69” was chosen because it rhymed well and, above all, because “69” has a double meaning.

Adams described it as a song about looking back on summer love and sex, inspired by songs like Bob Seger’s “Night Moves.”

The opening guitar riff is super catchy, and the song continues to be played in stadiums decades later. Bryan Adams has said he never imagined it would become such a huge anthem.
