Against that backdrop, the theme for World Environment Day 2026 — "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future." — is a powerful reminder that climate solutions aren't confined to boardrooms. They start in nature: in the diverse ecosystems that sustain our world.
The signals are getting harder to ignore. The warmest years ever recorded are now the last eleven, and after only a brief cooling pause from the 2025, 26 La Niña, a fresh El Niño is already turning up the dial on 2026.
Diving into established frameworks and exploring the organizational case for adoption, Kritika Chawla, who joined us from @IIM_I for our 2026 Summer Internship Programme, examines the factors driving the growth of fractional leadership in this thought paper. As fractional leadership gains momentum in India, the question for organizations in the country is not whether this model is legitimate. The real issue is whether their hiring practices, engagement protocols, and organizational cultures are sophisticated enough to extract its full value in the near future.
Fractional leadership has been on the rise globally. In just two years, we’ve witnessed the number of fractional leaders double, increasing from 60,000 to 120,000. The growing demand can no longer be overlooked as a passing trend. Instead, it needs to be recognized as a shift in the executive talent landscape and the evolving expectations of organizations in the post-pandemic world.
What does that mean? It means that working hand-in-glove with the CEO, CHROs are responsible for enabling transformation across the organization. It means having a seat at the table when markets, acquisitions, long-term goals, and pivots are being discussed. The CEO-CHRO partnership is about sharing ownership and accountability of culture and performance, and organizations can no longer overlook it.

The C-Suite dynamic that treated HR as an execution layer, absent from the process of business decisions, is outdated. Take a look at the world around you. The abundance of change in the form of tech advancements and its impact, talent gaps, and economic uncertainties –– the list can really go on. In this era of work, the CHRO isn’t just executing strategy. In fact, the most successful, future-ready ones are already shaping it.
Instead of the familiar titles (such as CIOs, CTOs, or CISOs), we are now witnessing the rise of a more integrated tech leader. What does this shift mean? For starters, the merging of roles can imply a more cohesive and integrated technology strategy and result in better, more streamlined decision-making. But does this work for every business?
In an era where technology leaders have become increasingly critical to business growth and organizational success, a new trend is emerging. With technology at the core of nearly all businesses, the leadership roles are steadily moving towards convergence.
When the Board, the C-suite, and HR move in sync, sustainability becomes part of how decisions get made, how capital gets deployed, and how talent gets rewarded. It becomes integrated into how the business actually runs — part of the company's DNA.
Ethical, sustainable growth now defines what business success looks like — and the companies turning ESG into a genuine competitive advantage are the ones where every level of the organization moves in the same direction.
But what does the role encompass? What can organizations expect from their fractional HR leaders? While each role is tailored to meet the different needs of organizations, most fractional CHROs handle a range of high-impact responsibilities. Swipe through to explore the checklist.

We've seen firsthand how the right fractional CHRO changes the equation. From shaping people strategy and embedding culture, to aligning technology roadmaps and navigating compliance — they bring strategic clarity and decisive leadership across every dimension that matters to a growing organization.
With businesses evolving and HR responsibilities becoming increasingly complex, the pressure to do more with less is rising. Fractional CHROs are emerging as a strong solution to navigate the HR function’s new responsibilities and execute high-impact initiatives. The appeal of bringing on board a part-time CHRO isn’t just cost efficiency. It’s a combination of agility, speed, and objectivity.
As the world of work continues to evolve, it’s becoming clear that it needs to be met with a different approach, one that balances adaptability with stability. Can an elastic approach in leadership, organizational design, and employee engagement empower organizations to navigate the challenges and opportunities of change successfully?

Disruption is no longer the threat. Instead, it’s become the norm. However, while leaders were trying to keep up with the unforgiving pace of change, we also witnessed a decline in employee engagement, increased leadership burnout, and a growing need to revisit organizational design.
