But let us not intellectualise or romanticise him too much. The bottom line is brutally simple: the man is hardcore, ruthless and, without doubt, downright evil!

An entire nation is suffering under this politics of fear, capture and compromise. Imagine churches, courts, law-enforcement institutions, chiefs, learned professors of economics—and even fellow presidents—all soiled in conscience never to be clean again because they have been compromised or silenced or like they tried on Uriri crocmailed for life!

That is the Crocodile’s real political legacy: not merely defeating opponents, but corrupting institutions, weakening consciences and forcing a whole nation to live beneath the weight of fear.

Professor, this is sophisticated blame-shifting dressed up as political theory.

Yes, politics requires organisation. But organisation does not operate in a vacuum. You cannot praise PF-ZAPU’s “discipline” while sanitising the state violence, arrests and massacres that forced it into the 1987 Unity Accord. ZAPU was not defeated by inadequate structures; it was crushed by a coercive state. Contemporary reporting records that the army massacred thousands and detained or tortured hundreds before the Accord. Human Rights Watch⁠

The same omission distorts the CCC story. Its structural weaknesses were real and must not be repeated. But they do not explain—or excuse—state institutions accepting recalls from Sengezo Tshabangu, a man whom the elected leadership said held no such office. Weakness created an opening; institutional complicity converted it into parliamentary capture.

Nor is 44% of the presidential vote, control of Zimbabwe’s major cities and enough parliamentary seats to deny ZANU-PF a two-thirds majority evidence of an opposition without a national presence. It is evidence of substantial citizen support despite an election condemned by observers for intimidation, restrictions and serious procedural shortcomings. EU Election Observation Mission⁠

The World Bank argument is even more misleading. The Bank explicitly states that its revised FCV classification measures exposure to recorded political violence. It is not an assessment of institutional performance or overall country risk. Zimbabwe falling outside that narrow classification does not certify good governance, prosperity, credible elections or functioning public institutions. World Bank methodology⁠

And which “opposition” rejected the finding? Which leaders, and where? No evidence is offered. A few social-media reactions are inflated into the extraordinary claim that millions of Zimbabweans “want Zimbabwe to fail”.

Zimbabweans do not want the country to fail. They want the ruling elite to stop confusing itself with the country. Zimbabwe is not ZANU-PF. Criticising corruption, repression, disputed elections and constitutional manipulation is not opposing Zimbabwe—it is defending Zimbabwe.

Organisation matters, Professor. But so do free political space, impartial institutions and one person, one vote. A lecture on opposition structures that absolves the machinery that bans, infiltrates, recalls, prosecutes and violently suppresses opponents is not analysis. It is regime apologetics.

In the new Zimbabwe, legal minds of this calibre must find their way onto our judicial benches—provided they continue to demonstrate this level of integrity, independence and courage.

Advocate Lewis Uriri was right to decline this offer. No careful legal professional should accept a US$350,000 “gift” publicly announced without prior consultation, long after the professional relationship had ended and all fees had been paid. What was presented as generosity also risked turning him and his professional reputation into part of a social-media campaign.

This decision was not a rejection of gratitude; it was a defence of professional independence. Ironically, this one act of integrity may bring him more genuine clients than any Range Rover or cash gift ever could. Serious clients want lawyers whose judgment, loyalty and professional standing cannot be bought—or even reasonably perceived to have been bought.

We must learn to applaud principled conduct even where we may disagree with a lawyer’s previous clients, cases or politics. Zimbabwe needs judges and lawyers who understand that reputation is worth more than riches and that public confidence in justice must never be compromised.

Well done, Advocate Uriri. This is the standard of integrity the new Zimbabwe must demand from its legal profession and future judiciary.
