From Lodwar to Lamu to Kiambu. There were more than 100 detention camps setup around Kenya btwn 1952 - 1960.
In our next project, we're setting out to map and document these sites!
Help us @museumofbc by contributing and sharing this amazing campaign https://t.co/LX3DzPHDIq
In the British museum, the Benin Bronzes will always be the Looted Benin Bronzes....

How can looted artifacts be loaned back to the countries they were stolen from? Who exactly benefits from this power structure?
In our latest piece we discuss the repatriation of Africa's stolen objects as seen from a more personal perspective.

Today on #KeArtefacts we present some traditional vessels, handcrafted containers used for storing liquids like milk & water; fat; food & even feathers. How many of them do you recognise? Do you still use any at home?

Do you feel that cultural institutions in Kenya (e.g museums, archives, libraries) are inclusive of diverse perspectives in their representation of culture?
We just completed three days of fieldwork in Nyeri county. Visiting former detention camp sites and gaining valuable insight into how we will begin to reconstruct them .
S/O to @museumofbc team. More on this coming soon.
Day 2: Field work
Mweru High School in Mukurweini was formerly Mweru Works Camp. Detainees were forced to make the bricks that were used to build the camp structures.
Notice the MWC on brick = " Mweru Works Camp "
With @museumofbc
The name Kangubiri is a modification of the English phrase " Can go free" - Aguthi works camp was one of the final camps along the detention pipeline. After being 'rehabilitated' here detainees would be realeased to go home. Hence " You can go free " @HistoryKE@KResearcher
Day 1 of tracing former camps.
Visited Kangubiri girls Tetu, Nyeri county. The school was formerly 'Aguthi Works Camp'. Some of the camp structures such as cells & torture chambers are still intact @museumofbc
Karunaini - At the site where Dedan Kimathi was shot. A politician erected a monument last year with his name beside Kimathi's photo!
Someone scraped it off!

In Kenya, national development of culture is only considered when it targets tourists / foreigners. Thinking of doing an article " NOT MASSAI ENOUGH " on how cultural commodification has stagnated the heritage industry
For now a brief thread..
I should hold a random Kenyan history, culture and well, current affairs quiz night in a bar in Nairobi. Questions and drinks get harder as the evening progresses, and you can't have either @KResearcher or @HistoryKE on your team because, well...
Mtakuja?
In March 2015, my grandfather candidly shared stories about his experience growing up in Kenya in the 20s, fighting for the British in World War II, returning home to start a family up to retirement in 1978.
This is his story.

@WehliyeMohamed After discovery of Robert Ouko's body at Got Alila, the cops ferried it away to the morgue. Then Pathologists asked them for scene of crime photos. The cops returned the body to Got Alila, tried to re-position it as it was when found, and then took photos!
Thread.
In 2009 a group of Mau Mau veterans brought a landmark case against the British gov suing them for torture & ill treatment faced at the hands of the colonial admin in 1950s. This was no easy task..
