Here is @Pep_Bonet to tell you the story behind the Hellbangers series, a story of metal culture and freedom in Africa: "As a Nikon European Ambassador, every year we do a group project. In 2013, we decided to focus on Africa and explore the continent in a new light. I didn't want to spotlight the wars, disasters, and sadness. It was called A New Light on Africa. One day, someone sent me a photo of a 'hellbanger' from Botswana. I didn't know the country, but the photo intrigued me. As someone who loved heavy metal, I wondered if I could combine my two greatest loves - Africa and heavy metal - into one project. I did some research and found that there was a metal scene in Botswana. I wrote to Vulture in Letlhakane, Botswana (he's the figurehead of the Hellbangers), and he welcomed me to visit and explore. And so, the Hellbangers journey started... For me, it was mind-blowing. The passion, the pageantry, the sheer dedication was just - wow, man! I decided to make portraits using natural light and a reflector. That was all that I needed. There was such a deep and profound sense of comfort and joy for me when I was with the Hellbangers. We'd be in the car, having some spliffs, listening to old albums from bands like @IronMaiden , @Metallica , and @myMotorhead . I felt like I was going back in time. Every day, Vulture would take me to meet one or two friends, and I would photograph them outside their homes. I didn't want to take them out of their environment. It was important to capture the context of Botswana and Africa in the images. They work from 8am to 5pm in their jobs, whether as security guards, nurses, or whatever, and then they go and have beers. This is who they are, this is how they dress. Hellbangers is about the power of freedom of expression. I managed to help bring Vulture's band, Overthrust, to perform at the huge Wacken Open Air festival in 2016. For the first time in history, a band from Botswana played at Wacken - and it was amazing. Just think about how incredible a thing that was. Sometimes when you're documenting the world, you feel like a messenger. You want to make a change, but it's naive to think that photography alone will change the world. You need an active role, and Hellbangers is a great example of that. Hellbangers is about the power of freedom. After witnessing so much fighting, suffering, and injustice in Africa, then seeing Botswana's heavy metal scene and these beautiful Hellbangers, I thought, "why didn't I see or experience this in other countries?" Then you realize it's because Botswana has been at peace for the last 60 years. This peace brought freedom, which in turn brought freedom of expression. I felt that our journey could result in such a powerful moment."
