Clover is usually ploughed in to provide nitrogen to soil, but is also used as a ‘cut and carry’ green manure by mowing, collecting and applying as a mulch. We’ve been using clover in this way for our perennial green manures project.

Plant profile #1: Clover – a thread!

Red clover is very well known as a traditional green manure used to fix nitrogen in crop rotations. It is a legume and as such has a relationship with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia bacteria which live in nodules in clover roots.

Rashid Benoy, horticulture tutor at #BlackMountainsCollege in the Bannau Brycheiniog has designed an exciting bioservice area with a wide range of species which either fix nitrogen or put on lots of growth fast – all planted next to the site of their future veg beds.
