JPR
Everyone here at the World of Groggs was devastated to hear of the passing of the great JPR Williams. The word "legend" doesn’t do the great man justice. He was the forerunner of the modern running fullback and one of the bravest players who ever pulled on the red shirt of Wales.
I have often written that JPR was a huge inspiration to me as a Groggmaker and rugby supporter. At a very young age he became my favourite subject…. I loved making him. He had it all - the mane of auburn hair, rolled down socks, trademark sideburns and he was always sporting some kind of facial scar, which I loved including in his figures.
Indeed, his disregard for his own safety seemed to sum up his fearless attitude both in attack and defence, and he never put less than 100% into every game he played. He was an extraordinary human being, and it was a privilege to meet him and get to know him over the years.
The last time I spoke to John, I named every scar on his face, including where and when he got them. He listened to me patiently and then remarked,
“You know your stuff don’t you!” to which I replied,
“Well, I’ve been studying your face all my life John”.
He took my idolatry very gracefully!
Alongside Gareth, JPR was the first named figure my father made over 54 years ago, which started everything for us here at the Groggshop. We will be forever grateful for John and his family’s support and understanding over the years.
Our love and thoughts go out to Scilla and the family at this difficult time.
Rest in peace, JPR Superstar
