Thrilled to see my research make an appearance in this week’s @spectator
The word ‘thug’ is culturally and racially charged, founded in 19th-century colonialism – we should think more critically about its use.

Shockingly late of me, but many thanks to @elementaladam for having me on the panel for this year’s Satirical Bodies @BSECS to talk on Pitt, gothic satire, and bloody ghosts in Downing Street! Great fun, and a privilege to speak alongside such amazing papers! #18C
The Paper of the Month from Victorian Literature and Culture @VLCjournal is '“Thuggee in London!”: Metropolitan Sensationalism and the Invention of the Thug' by Jonathan Perris, available #openaccess!

@SophiaDanielleD @vagina_museum@TheLancet a) It’s ironic that people are using this to attack a young woman (the author).
b) They clearly didn’t read the article
The statue of #EdwardColston, slave trader, pulled down just now. Let's hope in its place we see a commemoration. such as this unofficial artwork added in 2018, of the suffering in the ships of horror and death that made him rich.
You know, the word 'thug' comes from imperialism - from C19th stories of British travellers being strangled (thuggee) by highway robbers in India. All mobs in London then came to be called 'thugs' - the word was used to divide society, to create 'us' and 'them'. Nothing changes
If you watch Fake News @CNN or MSDNC, you would think that the killers, terrorists, arsonists, anarchists, thugs, hoodlums, looters, ANTIFA & others, would be the nicest, kindest most wonderful people in the Whole Wide World. No, they are what they are - very bad for our Country!
Reason unlimited why I love this place. I walk out my door, up one street and see @Malala and @GretaThunberg talking outside. Two powerful young women standing for justice, truth and equality for all. So many, are so grateful, for all that you do. Keep shining bright.
