The text doesn’t say that a person looses their free will and are made to desire Christ. There are many Scriptures that speak against this including Matt 22:1-14.

For those who reject the gospel, it becomes a power that exposes, judges, and hardens (John 3:19-21, Isaiah 6:9-10/Matt 13:14-15, John 12:47-48).

GOD uses the message of the cross as the necessary instrument to spark and build that belief and then we are born again by the Word (1 Peter 1:23).

If regeneration happened independently or prior to the Word's effect, Peter would have said we are born again by the Spirit alongside the Word.

1 Peter 1:23: "Since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God."

We see that faith comes by hearing the word of Christ (gospel), not regeneration. We see this all throughout Scripture. Including John 6:44-45. When Jesus say “everyone who has heard and learned….”

John 3:36: "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life..." If a person must be regenerated to believe, they would technically "have life" before they actually believed.

If they don't believe that, they aren't born of GOD. The focus is on identifying who is saved, not charting the chronological order of how it happened.

Based on the grammar — If being Born of GOD causes Righteousness (in 2:29), then being Born of GOD must cause faith (in 5:1).

@ymmotrojam @jerry_duck48985 @Soteriology101 Exactly, John did not write a systematic theology chart on how to get saved. He wrote these epistles to help believers know if they are saved. Therefore John is not giving us the order of how to be saved, rather the evidence that one is saved.
