Three lions recently died at Tokyo's Tama Zoological Park.

Mugi, Ichigo, and Luena were born, lived, and died in confinement, deprived of everything that makes life worth living for a wild animal. Taking care of lions and other animals during a heatwave is the most basic job a zoo has to do, yet the animals pay the price when facilities fail. This tragedy is a stark reminder that zoos can never provide wild animals with the control and freedom they need to protect themselves.

Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. At Ichikawa City Zoo, Punch the monkey remains deprived of the freedom, companionship, and stimulation that intelligent, social primates need. At Tennoji Zoo, elephants Dara, Amoi, and Kelat (DAK) are kept in barren enclosures that can never provide the space, autonomy, social lives, or opportunities to roam that elephants need to thrive.

Zoos are not rescues or sanctuaries; they exist to display animals for profit, not to put animals' needs first.

This image shows an Ajinomoto-funded study published earlier this month, in which experimenters fed mice an ingredient derived from coffee, injected them with cancer cells, repeatedly forced them to run on a treadmill, took blood from their eye sockets, and then killed them 💔🐭

In China, large groups of protestors have been gathering to demand justice for these dogs, and the overwhelming response on social media shows widespread support for animal protection statutes. 

Without meaningful legal protections, animals remain dangerously vulnerable, and abusers escape punishment. This case should be a turning point. China needs strong anti-cruelty legislation to help prevent such horrific abuse and ensure that those who harm animals are held accountable.
