If we need ~50k extra construction workers by 2030 to meet new build goals and 2024 net migration was 79k (30k Irish returnees), how does a broad halving help supply? Isn’t the lever to pull here: shift the composition of immigration: skilled permits, apprenticeships, bring Irish back, rather than bluntly cut immigration in half?
@davidmcw Focusing on large immigration cuts risks undermining skilled construction labour supply which is 15% of construction workers. We need policy to increase skilled migrant labour. The belief of a hard cap on supply of 35,000 homes is self fulfilling otherwise.
